Can You Get a Cloud Based Time Machine Backup?
Not directly. A cloud based Time Machine backup is not built in. Apple says Time Machine backs up to “an external hard disk, a disk on your network, or a Time Capsule.” To go off site, add a cloud backup app, copy a NAS to the cloud, or use Arq.
| Option | How it works | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud backup app | Runs next to Time Machine and uploads your files | Low | Most Mac users |
| NAS + cloud | Time Machine backs up to a NAS, which copies data to cloud storage | Medium to high | Homes with a NAS |
| Arq to your own storage | Backup app writes encrypted, versioned backups to storage you choose | Medium | Technical users |
Mac users often tell me, “I have Time Machine, so I’m covered.” Over ten years, I have seen that drive stolen with the laptop more than once. Time Machine is excellent. It just needs a partner off site, which is what people mean by a cloud based Time Machine backup.
Why Time Machine Is Not Enough on Its Own
Time Machine keeps hourly, daily and weekly snapshots on a local disk. That gives fast restores and easy version browsing. However, the disk usually sits in the same room as the Mac. Fire, theft, flood and ransomware can reach both.
That is why the 3-2-1 rule asks for one copy off site. Our guide to a backup of backup explains the reasoning.
Option 1: Add a Cloud Backup App
The simplest path is to keep Time Machine and add a cloud backup service. Both run quietly, and each protects against different risks. Backblaze, for example, backs up a Mac and its directly attached drives for $99 per year.
- Keep Time Machine running to an external drive.
- Install a cloud backup app and sign in.
- Let it select your user files, and add external drives.
- Exclude the Time Machine drive itself from the cloud backup.
- Let the first upload finish, then test a restore.
Option 2: Time Machine to a NAS, Then to the Cloud
Many NAS devices can act as a Time Machine destination over the network. The NAS can then send its data to cloud storage with its own backup app, such as Synology Hyper Backup or QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync.
This is the closest thing to a true cloud based Time Machine backup. It works, but restoring a Mac from a cloud copy of Time Machine data is slow and complex. It suits homes that already run a NAS. Read our guide to NAS to cloud backups for the setup.

Arq is Mac and Windows backup software with end-to-end encryption. It writes versioned backups to storage you choose, such as an object storage bucket. Arq uses a one-time license, with Arq Premium available as a subscription that includes storage.
Pair it with object storage like Backblaze B2. This setup gives strong control and privacy, but needs more care during setup.
What About iCloud?
iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos sync files across Apple devices. They are not a Mac backup, because deletions sync too. Use iCloud for access and Time Machine plus a cloud backup for protection.
Privacy for Mac Backups
Turn on encryption for your Time Machine disk when you set it up. For cloud backups, choose a private key or end-to-end encryption if offered. Store the key in your password manager and on paper.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use iCloud as a Time Machine destination?
No. Time Machine backs up to external disks, network disks or a Time Capsule. iCloud is a sync service and is not offered as a Time Machine target. Use iCloud for syncing files and photos, and pair Time Machine with a cloud backup app for off-site protection.
Can I back up my Time Machine drive to the cloud?
You can, but it is not ideal. Time Machine data is stored in a format that is awkward to restore from a cloud copy. It is better to back up the Mac’s files directly with a cloud backup app, and keep Time Machine for fast local restores.
Does Backblaze work alongside Time Machine?
Yes. Backblaze backs up a Mac’s user files and directly attached drives to the cloud, while Time Machine handles local snapshots. Many Mac users run both. Exclude the Time Machine drive from Backblaze, since it only holds a second copy of the same data.
How do I restore a Mac from a cloud backup?
Set up the Mac, install the cloud backup app, sign in, and restore files to your user folders. Apps are reinstalled separately. For large restores, some providers ship data on a drive. A Time Machine restore is faster when the local drive is available.
Is Time Machine encrypted?
Time Machine can encrypt backup disks when you set them up, using a password you choose. Turn this on, especially for portable drives. If you forget the password, the backup cannot be read, so store it safely in a password manager.
