How Do You Back Up Google Drive?

To back up Google Drive, keep a second copy of your files outside Google. There are three main ways: export with Google Takeout, mirror Drive to your computer and include it in a computer backup, or use a cloud-to-cloud backup service. Drive’s own trash and version history are not enough.

Over ten years, I have helped several people who lost Drive folders through a shared-folder mistake or a hacked account. Each of them believed Google was their backup. This guide shows how to keep a copy that a Drive problem cannot touch.

Why Does Google Drive Need a Backup?

Google Drive is storage and sync, so changes and deletions spread quickly. Its safety nets have limits. Google says files in Trash “remain in Trash for 30 days, then they’re deleted forever.”

Version history has limits too. For non-Google files such as PDFs, Google says “a version might be permanently deleted after 30 days or if there are 100 newer versions.” You can mark a version “Keep forever,” but only one by one.

Account risks also matter. A hacked account, a locked login, or storage left over quota for two years can all put your files at risk. Google says content can become eligible for deletion after two years over quota, with at least three months’ notice.

How to Back Up Google Drive With Google Takeout

Takeout exports your Drive files into downloadable archives. It is simple, free and good for occasional snapshots.

  1. Go to Google Takeout and sign in.
  2. Click “Deselect all,” then select only Drive.
  3. Click “Next step” and choose a delivery method, such as a download link by email.
  4. Choose “Export once” or a scheduled export every 2 months for one year.
  5. Pick Zip and a 50 GB archive size to reduce splitting.
  6. Download the archives within about 7 days, before they expire.
  7. Store them on an external drive and in your computer backup.

Takeout gives you a snapshot, not continuous protection. Use it alongside one of the automatic methods below.

How to Mirror Drive and Include It in a Computer Backup

This method keeps a full local copy of Drive on your computer, then lets your backup service protect it with version history.

  1. Install Google Drive for desktop.
  2. Open its preferences and choose “Mirror files” for My Drive, so files are stored locally.
  3. Make sure the computer has enough free disk space for your whole Drive.
  4. Add the local Google Drive folder to your computer backup selection.
  5. Let both finish, then restore a test file from the backup.

Streaming mode will not work for this, because streamed files live online and use almost no local space. Mirroring downloads a full copy, which your backup app can read.

When to Use a Cloud-to-Cloud Backup Service

Cloud-to-cloud services connect to your Google account and copy Drive data to their own storage every day. They suit Google Workspace teams and anyone with more Drive data than local disk space. IDrive, for example, sells cloud-to-cloud backup for Google Workspace.

Before choosing one, check how long it keeps versions, where it stores data and how restores work. CISA suggests considering a multi-cloud approach for cloud-to-cloud backups, to avoid vendor lock-in.

What About Google Docs, Sheets and Slides?

Native Google files are not normal files on your computer. A mirrored folder contains small shortcut files that open in the browser. To keep usable copies, export them with Takeout, or download them as Office files.

Google Docs keep their own detailed edit history, separate from Drive file versions. That history helps with edits, but it disappears if the file is permanently deleted.

Privacy Tips for Your Drive Copy

Your backup holds everything in Drive, so protect it as carefully as Drive itself. Encrypt external drives that hold Takeout archives. Choose a backup service with a private key option. Revoke access from any third-party service you stop using.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google back up my Google Drive for me?

Google replicates your data across its systems, which protects against hardware failure on its side. It does not protect against deletions, bad edits, ransomware syncing from your computer, or account loss. Trash empties after 30 days, so keep your own copy outside Google.

How often should I back up Google Drive?

If you work in Drive every day, use a method that runs daily, such as a mirrored folder with a computer backup or a cloud-to-cloud service. For light users, a scheduled Takeout export every two months plus a local mirror may be enough.

Can I restore a whole Google Drive from a Takeout export?

You can upload the exported files back into Drive, but it is a manual process. Folder structure is kept, but sharing settings and comments are not restored the same way. Google Docs export as Office or similar formats, so check that important formatting survived.

Does mirroring Google Drive use a lot of disk space?

Yes. Mirroring stores a full copy of My Drive on your computer, so you need free space equal to your Drive usage. If your disk is too small, mirror only key folders, or use a cloud-to-cloud backup that does not need local space.

Are shared drives included in a Google Drive backup?

Not always. Takeout and mirroring focus on your own files, and shared drives may need separate settings or admin tools. Workspace teams should confirm that their backup service supports shared drives and test a restore of a shared folder.
